Celestial Selections

Having grown up in a Middle Eastern family, the moon and stars is a symbol I know far too well.  While many believe the moon and stars to have originated with Islam, this is actually not the case at all.   The crescent moon is seen in various cultures.  In fact, the word “crescent” originates from the Latin word creare, which means to create.  Accordingly, the crescent moon was used to represent Greek goddess Diana, who was also known as the goddess of fertility. In the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire adopted the symbol, and at that time, the moon and stars was depicted on flags during a time of war.  Today, the moon and stars symbol can be founded on the flags of several countries such as Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Algeria, and Mauritania to name a few.

This season, designers have embraced the symbol in everything from jewelry to furniture to clothing.  Regardless of the symbol’s origin, when I look up at the sky and see the moon and stars, I feel at peace.  So…why not capture some of that peace and serenity in our wardrobe?!?
