As today is Veterans Day here in the United States, I decided to highlight one of my favorite looks inspired by our incredible men and women serving in the military. Because of the selfless efforts of our military, we have the freedom to live our daily lives the way we choose. For this I send my utmost thanks to our troops both domestically and overseas.
Like the men and women serving our country, the military trend is elegant, bold, and strong.
In 2011 while at a visit to the Summerfield Community Centre in Birmingham, Kate Middleton turned heads in an amazing ensemble by the one and only Alexander McQueen. If McQueen does something like no other designer, it most definitely is the military chic look. Middleton loved McQueen’s military pieces so much, God forbid, she actually wore them twice (most recently to a visit to Bletchley Park this year).
Military accents can be dressed up or down, for morning or evening, for work or for play. The options are endless! I personally love the look because I enjoy wearing pieces that pop but are also sophisticated. Oh, and I also have an obsession with buttons. Weird, I know.
It does not take a genius to determine the origin of this trend. The uniforms worn by soldiers across the globe have had a major impact on designers like Burberry, Aquascutum, St. John, and Alexander McQueen. As mentioned in a previous post (see “Deep in the Trenches” for more), the military style trench coat was inspired by the looks worn by soldiers fighting in World War I. The bomber jacket, often labeled a staple of any woman’s wardrobe, was inspired by the jackets worn by our men in uniform fighting in the Korean War.
For a great work look, try pairing the St. John Military Jacket with a navy skirt and pumps for a look approved by the Duchess herself. Random thought. I am definitely not a fan of nude hose. Kate is a member of the royal family, so she is kind of stuck with the look. Unless you are going to court, I vote “NO”!
Looking for a more casual, lazy day look? Try pairing the Ash flats pictured below with black leggings and an oversized olive top or sweater. When in doubt, a loose top and leggings makes me happy. You can always jazz up the look with a fun bag.
Ready to go out for the night but not freeze? I LOVE the Marc by Marc Jacobs Benjamine Sweater Dress! It is warm, comfortable, and the perfect color. Rock the dress with some sky high black pumps, and you are ready for wherever the night may take you.
