I have received several requests for affordable Christmas gift ideas, so today I am highlighting a few “safe” gift ideas.
When it comes to co-workers, it is so important to match the office culture. If you are new to your company, you may want to casually ask around you to see what the gift policy may be. Some companies have strict policies against gift giving during the holiday season, so you don’t want to run the risk of either offending someone or violating a company policy. If you do not have a feel for the vibe of your office, or you simply don’t feel like spending the money on gifts for people you don’t really know, the safest option is baked goods. Whether you are Christian, Jewish, or an Atheist, cookies are never a bad thing to receive during the holiday season.
When shopping for a co-worker of the opposite sex, avoid items that can be viewed as romantic or intimate such as perfume/cologne, clothing, or other personalized items. There are certain gifts that are generally acceptable. Does your boss have a favorite book? One year I bought my boss a special edition of one of her favorite books, and she absolutely loved it. The book cost me $10, but it was the thought behind it that made her smile. When buying gifts for women, accessories are great because if your co-workers are not fond of your selection, they can easily re-gift for another holiday party.
I have had a few friends ask me if I was socially acceptable to give gift cards to co-workers. I will give the typical lawyer answer and say, “it depends”. If your boss loves music, an iTunes gift certificate is a sure win. However, giving gift certificates are essentially like handing someone money, and some find this practice offensive. This is increasingly true if you are giving the gift to your boss as opposed to someone with an equivalent job title. Also, with gift cards, your co-workers will know exactly how much you spent, and sometimes its more fun to fool everyone.
Take a look at some easy gift ideas you can give the male or female co-worker in your life.
