There is so much to celebrate today. It’s FRIDAY. It’s SPRING. Oh and today is the International Day of Happiness. You may be wondering if this is for real, and I am happy to inform you that this is legit.
Ten Keys to Happier Living
When I was studying for the Texas Bar Exam, I crafted all kinds of weird pneumonics in order to grasp key concepts. Want to be happier?!? I am the first person to admit that I need some major work in this area, and all you have to remember is GREAT DREAM. Interested in learning more? Click here to join the happy movement.
- Giving: I have joined the Junior League of Houston, where I give back to the Houston community with countless fabulous women.
- Relating: I love connecting with new and different people each and every day. One of the ways I do this is through my blog. I love getting to know my followers and hearing their perspective.
- Exercising: I exercise seven days a week in the mornings. There is something about a little cardio that gets me going. One area I need to improve on is varying my work out. When you are physically active, you can accomplish anything. In this photo, I completed the Houston Marathon without training for it. Granted, this is something I do not recommend.
- Appreciating: This is probably the area I need the most work on. A great way to appreciate the world around you is to travel. This photo was taken in Singapore where I met some incredible people and had many beautiful sights to take in.
- Trying Out: Trying new things can be challenging both physically and emotionally. There is something about tackling something, big or small, that you never thought you could handle that brings happiness. In this photo, I attempted my first aerial yoga class!
- Direction: As an argumentative third grade girl (with crazy hair), my teachers always told me I needed to be a lawyer. Sure enough, I stuck to the plan.
- Resilience: The first thing that came to my mind is the scene in Batman Begins where Bruce’s father asks his son why we fall down. The answer? To pick ourselves up again…and grow stronger.
- Emotion: For me, positive emotions take over when I am surrounded by good friends. Here are some wonderful friends, both old and new.
- Acceptance: Accepting who you are is often easier said than done. A good friend of mine shared with me her tip for moving towards acceptance, which is to say one positive thing about yourself each day. Acceptance can come with baby steps, so I will start by smiling more and tossing out the negative vibes.
- Meaning: I believe that meaning is tied to giving. Helping others has given me a whole new sense of meaning. This photo was taken at the Ronald McDonald House where young professionals in the Houston community serve meals to families.
What are some of the steps you are taking to be happier?!?!

Well written; I agree with a lot of what you’ve said. I think that everyone has to define their own happiness. Too many people try to be happy through the eyes of someone else. Funnily enough, I’m working on a piece about happiness now; maybe you’ll check it out when I post at “The Bajan Vegan”

One of the steps I am taking to be happier is to practice “self-care.” Self-care has become very important to me. Taking care of my physical, mental and spiritual health has brought balance to my life.

Carolynn, that is wonderful! I’m so glad to hear that you are obtaining life balance. Self-care is often easier said than done, but it is incredibly important.
