Office Style: The Shirtdress

As I entered the elevator to ride the eight floors up to my office, I was stopped by a young lady who said she needed help.  Naturally I thought there must be a serious issue at hand.  Nope.  She just needed a little fashion advice.  My new friend on the third floor, who shall remain nameless, was looking for tips on how to have fun with her work attire but also remain comfortable throughout a long day.  The first tip that came to mind was “invest in a shirtdress…or two…or five.”

I love shirtdresses because they can be dressed up or down and range from being suitable for a lazy Sunday to a day in the office.  Designers have taken note of this versatility, so ladies (and Jaden Smith?), you are in luck.  There is a lot to choose from.

The great thing about a good shirtdress is it can become a staple piece in your wardrobe cycle, and you can change the look completely by styling it with different accessories, shoes, and jewelry. If you work in a more conservative and demure setting, try pairing the navy blue Cynthia Steffe shirtdress (pictured below) with nude pumps and a camel tote.  Take that same dress, pair it with some fun bright colored wedges and a statement necklace, and you’re ready for a fun night out.  If you’re office is more laid back (or you just have a fun personality), there are some great prints to choose from to liven up your look.  If you go bold, I recommend pairing with either flats or kitten heels in simple colors such as nude, black, or navy.

As my new building mate has a bit of a fear of the local mall, I have selected shirtdresses that can all be purchased online at Nordstrom. Yay for free shipping and returns!

Great post lovely and possibly the best fashion advice you can pass off to anyone! Shirt dresses are truly a women’s best friend … I myself have so many different styles in a range of classic to bold colors and all sorts of fantastic prints. I use it as an easy base to resort to when I am stumped and have not a clue in the world what to wear. AND I absolutely adore its versatility to be able to transition the look from day to evening in a matter of minutes. Love the styles you have chosen to showcase; I personally am drawn to the all the vivid prints.. perfect for this upcoming Spring/Summer!

Thanks so much hun!! You can’t go wrong with the shirtdress. I’ve got a bunch too. While I have a few “conservative” ones, mine tend to be a little crazy. 😉 Sometimes (or more than just sometimes), I’m in the mood to go bum, and it’s nice to be able to put one thing over your head, throw some flats on, and head out for the day.

I’m totally with you on the vivid prints. Now if only the sun can come out!!
