This time last year, I was genuinely disappointed with the red carpet fashion. Given that these shows are insanely boring and long-winded, the fashion needs to be on point!
Well, this year, I was pleasantly surprised with how much improvement I saw at the first award show of the 2016 awards season.
My top 5 looks of the evening:
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Jennifer Lopez
- Rosie Huntington-Whitely
- Jenna Dewan-Tatum
- Kate Bosworth
Here are some of the top trends of the night:
Metallics
The most common trend of the evening was the metallic look. The red carpet appeared draped in various jewel tone metallics, which gave the evening an almost mystical vibe. As I have a love for bold looks, I enjoyed seeing the trend; however, there were definitely some fashion offenders that went overboard.
My favorite metallic dress was Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s Zuhair Murad creation. Second place goes to Bryce Dallas Howard who made news by admitting to order her size 6 Jenny Packam dress from Neiman Marcus. How sad is it that size 6 is hard to find?!?!
White/Neutrals
The second biggest trend is definitely the 50 shades of white. Wearing white can definitely be a great way to make a statement.
My favorite white dresses of the evening were worn by Taraji P. Henson and Laverne Cox. Jane Fonda wins the award for my least favorite. She normally looks amazing, but yesterday she looked like a frosted cake. Eva Longoria’s dress has been viewed by many as being one of the least favorite looks. I completely disagree. I think the dress is beautiful. Eva Longoria is a bit on the shorter side, and had she been a few inches taller, the look would be completely different. I would love this dress in mint green.
Capes
I absolutely LOVE capes! Ever since Gweneth Paltrow sported the white Tom Ford cape gown, I was sold. This is saying something, as I find her incredibly obnoxious. Jennifer Lopez is my top cape look of the night, and she also ranks #1 on my list of favorite gowns altogether.
Canary
Speaking of my love for Jennifer Lopez’s dress, she happens to cover another trend/color of the evening. Several actresses sported canary yellow, which is a very difficult color to pull off. Do not try this at home unless you have some melanin in your skin. 🙂
Cleavage
My least favorite trend of the night was the full on golden globe display. Apologies for the over used pun. Some of the dresses were a little too much. My least favorite cleavage highlighting dress was worn by Katy Perry. The simple Prada look was far too tight and showed far too much. I also LOATHED Kate Hudson’s look. She tends to nail it or try to hard. She was definitely trying too hard this time….this was not a dress in my opinion. While Kirsten Dunst was widely praised for her Valentino gown, I was not the biggest fan.
My favorites had to be Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Both of these women were glowing.
Have a favorite look of the night?!?

Wonderful review! I was grinding my teeth together hours before the awards extravaganza because last year I was NOT pleased haha. This year I was mesmerized by a handful of stunning styles on the red carpet and thankfully for that! My favorite of the evening was Jennifer Loper in her gorgeous Haute Couture, cape gown by Giambattista Valli; the color was ravishing on her and she added just the right touch of glam with her perfect accessories.

Thanks so much, lovely! I was expecting the fashion to be absolutely dreadful, so I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Jennifer Lopez was stunning. No surprises here. Wearing 200 carats of diamonds can definitely make a gorgeous woman stand out even more. I also loved the dress she wore at the after party. That color is so difficult to pull off for most, but it happens to be a color I love. 🙂

I too was not a fan of Kirsten Dunst’s dress. Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s dress embodies the Golden Globes – a bit fun / sexy but classy. I don’t find Jennifer Lawrence’s dress to be dressy enough – it’s a very interesting silhouette and suits her – but just meh for an award show.

I absolutely agree with you. Kirsten was so underwhelming, and Jenna was just stunning as usual. She hasn’t really gone over-the-top, which I love. Jennifer Lawrence’s dress was a bit simple for such an event. I think I liked it for her because she tends to be a bit loud (personality wise), so it was a nice way of toning her down. I’m one of the few people who finds her incredibly annoying.

Jennifer Lawrence IS annoying! So full of herself, and rude.
