Have you found yourself restless in the summertime heat? I know I sure have. In Houston, if you’re not cooling off in the mall, Starbucks, or a restaurant, you are likely relaxing at home. When you visit a city as a tourist, people will often recommend various museums; yet, many of us neglect our local museums.
With the Kusama exhibit on display in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, I decided it was time to break the dry spell and embrace the local art scene. While the exhibit will only set you back about ten minutes, it is well worth it.
Yayoi Kusama is an acclaimed Japanese artist who is well known for her use of color. When you immerse yourself in one of her works, it is as though you are in a trance. From making political statements to writing fierce works of art, her presence is felt on a global scale. For those interested in fashion, Kusama has collaborated with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton.
The Houston exhibit first takes you to a vibrant display of color. The cube-shaped room had Japanese poetry playing in the background while the inflatable figurines lit up and swayed. It was as though they were dancing…such an incredible experience. As her works are known for being unique and colorful, I could not help but sport a little fun with my outfit.

In addition to Houston, Kusama’s works are currently being showcased in Los Angeles, New Canaan, Oslo, and London. People are flocking to see her latest works which feature Infinity Mirror rooms.
These cubic spaces are lined with mirrors and flickering lights which is said to be symbolic of the cycle of life. The floors are lined with water, and if you’re clumsy like me, be careful. 🙂
If anyone has visited Kusama’s other exhibits, please share!!! I’m dying to go to the Victoria Miro Gallery in London!!!
Hope you all have a lovely weekend!!!
