Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending the beautiful wedding of my dear friends, Anu and Sean. As this was an Indian wedding, you can imagine the display of color and light. I loved every minute of it, and my next few posts will chronicle my lovely experience.
The first night of festivities for me was the mehndi night. Mehndi, which comes from Sanskrit, is a paste that is applied on the skin. You may know it by the name henna. Henna tattoos are definitely a hot trend and can last you a few weeks.
In India, mendhi is tied to a Hindu ritual. As someone who is half Egyptian, I am proud to report that the application of henna on the human form was allegedly first performed by the Egyptians. I love the beautiful designs you can find all over the world, and I was certainly happy to participate.
A bride will have mendhi applied to her skin prior to the wedding. This can take anywhere from 3-7 hours depending on the intricate nature of the design. Some brides may have their groom’s initials or even a story painted on the palms of their hands. I think it is an incredible tradition, and here’s a look at what my lovely friend Anu did for her wedding.
Brides often will host a night where her friends and family have mendhi applied. I joined in on the fun.
Are these cookies adorable or what?!? 🙂
As I waited for my ink to dry, I was entertained by the beautiful Indian dance performances. The bride is a wonderful dancer herself, and she performed in addition to members of her family and close friends. Even her parents performed the story of she and her groom’s first meeting. I loved every second of it!
While the dance party danced on through the night, the following morning would be begin bright and early the next day. Stay tuned for much more!

So beautiful and so interesting. I have former students from Pakistan who have gotten married and returned to show me and other teachers their wedding albums. Stunning. I did not know that henna was originally Egyptian.

I’m sure there albums are amazing. What a treat for you to watch your students grow! Yes, the pharaohs were all about henna. It’s incredibly fascinating to me.
